Cappellano Barolo Pie Rupestris 2018

Augusto Capellano took over from his father Teobaldo, a revered legend in Barolo and further afield, after he passed in 2009. Big shoes to fill for a young, fifth-generation winemaker whose family estate in Piedmont was officially founded in 1870, but has been producing Barolo as far back as 1861. Equally big shoes when your father was quoted as saying "Making Barolo is hedonism, it is art. Wine is hedonism. But wine, too, needs identity: I need to be able to say 'This is Barolo.' "

Giorgio says:

I am always amazed how Gabutti vineyard and "Cappellano" always respond to challenging vintages. These wines are work of magic. Great tension, fine tannin and elegance.

Pacina Ciliegiolo 2020

The Ciliegiolo grape variety is a common component in many Chianti. Due to the notorious difficulty involved in growing this temperamental thick-skinned variety, however, it is far less common to see it expressed as it is here in its pure varietal form. A great opportunity to explore a lesser known variety of the region.

Tenute Guardasole Virgilio Rosso 2020

Tenute Guardasole is one of the many micro-estates in Alto Piemonte born from a rebirth of long-abandoned vineyards. The property comprises three parcels that total just two hectares under vine. Organic farming, low intervention winemaking and what is clearly extraordinary care yield reds that are incredibly distinctive. Wine makers Marco Bui and Annalisa Gri look set to join the stars of Alto Piemonte’s new generation. This is a blend of vespolina (50%), nebbiolo (30%) and dolcetto (20%). Harmonious!

Simon Busser L’Originel 2019

The vines are in beautiful health. Simon works all of the parcels with a horse, and avoids tractor compaction as much as possible. I n the winery, apart from extreme diligence in terms of fruit selection and elevage, things are simple. All of the oak is very old, fermentation takes place in concrete and fruit is destemmed. Nothing is ever added. The wines are lightly oxidative and a total joy to drink. - Campbell Burton, importer

70% Malbec and 30% merlot.

Nicolas Carmarans Mauvais Temps 2019

The Nicolas Carmarans Mauvais Temps is a particular favourite. This light, but complex red wine from the Aveyron in central France is lively, exciting, delicious and leaves you wanting more! This wine is comprised of fer servadou and cabernet franc.

Gerard Marula VdF Baconnelle 2021

Touraine and Loire, declassified Chinon actually, and all cabernet franc. Baconnelle, bacon hell. Attractive perfume of forest floor, dried cranberry, cherry, smoked ham, whiffs of mezcal and white pepper. Crisp edged in the palate with a nice, dark cherry juicy slosh, some earthy spices in the mix, liquorice, game meat, white pepper galore. Sense of lightness but finds great balance in green vs red/blue fruit character. Lovely. Lithe. Pure.
